Holding space is a skill that takes time and hence you have to be patient for you to learn the art. This is the process of learning how to be present to other people's situations. There are times when people may need you to be there for them emotionally and that is known as holding space. This case requires you to be therefore by giving other peoples time and being there to listen. this skill also requires you to be emotionally intelligent so that you cannot be consumed by other peoples feelings and emotions. This calls you to act as a therapist. Holding space requires you to be objective rather than being objective. You must try all you can to avoid making a judgement.
There are several tips that should help you hold space for someone else. You must create an environment where the other person feels free to share openly. The other person should feel free from being judged and hence will open freely. Ensure that you recognize their feelings and emotions as being valid. Avoid reactions that could suggest judgement. Avoid questions and comments. If you want to, you can wait until there is a break or in the end of the conversation. This will give you time to think and also create and give a solution to the matter. Avoid giving solutions to any problem. If you feel like you want to give a solution about the matter, you can save it for another day. Avoid accepting the matter or disagreeing with it. Trust that the individual will find a solution to the matter at hand.
When you are holding space for someone, there are some other elements that you must have at hand. You must have love and kindness. Avoid being aggressive at anytime. compassion will create an environment where the individual can find solutions. it will also create space where you can give the client or your partner time to think of what he or she was told and act towards the situation.
Practice deep listening. This involves understanding the matter. The listening may also include taking the matter and understanding it deeply. In this case, a client can open up without leaving other matters.
Take a breath in between the conversations. Breathing will keep you intact through the conversation. When you are aware of your emotions, you can help the other person. It will also allow you to lose ego and create a space where you are submissive to listen.
