Colored gemstones are much more delicate than diamonds and need special care and careful cleaning. Regular gentle cleaning is recommended instead of the harsh cleaning required to remove a heavy soil build up. Proper storage is also important in caring for your valuables.
Diamonds are used for drilling. They can withstand high temperatures and then a fast cool down in water. Many gemstones would crack or shatter with such extreme temperature changes. Emerald, opal, amethyst and turquoise are some of the gemstones that should be kept away from heat such as a sunny windowsill. When taking a trip to the beach, delicate gemstones should be left at home. Enjoying the sand and then jumping into the surf may be too extreme temperature changes for these gemstones.
Even perfume and lotions may harm turquoise and malachite. Ammonia, caustics and abrasives should never be used on gemstones. Chlorine in swimming pool water may cause pitting in some colored stones. Gemstones may also be damaged by fingernail polish remover.
Ultra sonic cleaners should not be used on a regular basis. Agitation of the machine will remove dirt and also dislodge loose stones from their settings. Some liquid cleaners used may be harmful to the gemstones.
The safest recommended cleaning is to wash in warm water with a mild liquid soap. Then, dry with a soft cloth. The sink drain should always be closed or covered when rinsing any jewelry. With proper care and regular cleaning gemstones should not need any harsh cleaners. Inspection by a jeweler is recommended at least once a year. The jeweler will check for loose stones, worn prongs or any other problems that may arise.
After cleaning, gemstones and all jewelry should be kept in safe place. Protection from damage and theft should be considered when storing jewelry. That jewelry box on the dresser is probably the first place a burglar might look. A safe or hideaway would be better for valuable jewelry and use the fancy jewelry box for costume jewelry. Heirloom pieces seldom worn should be kept in a safe deposit box.
Jewelry boxes with individual compartments or a felt-lined box or tray is recommended for storing precious gems and other jewelry. Rings and other jewelry items with delicate gemstones are safest when stored separately in jewelry bags or pouches. Stones bumping together may get scratched or otherwise damaged. The time you spend caring for your jewels is well worth the time and effort.

A bench jeweler is responsible for repairs on customer jewelry. They have gemological training but are a bit out of date on pricing, etc.
First of all, consider the term "chips". Folks often speak of little diamonds as being chips when in fact most are cut diamonds. Modern production methods almost require fairly consistent diamond shapes for quick stone setting and chips are not the ticket for that!
Bench jewelers routinely set very small stones from perhaps 1/2 point upward. A diamond of 1/2 point is 0.005 carats. In comparison, a pair of earrings with a total weight of 80 points would need 40 points per earring. If using 1/2 pointers, that would be 80 diamonds per earring! Yes, even the 1/2 point stones are cut, not chips. More than likely, earrings like you mentioned would use stones of 1 point or 2 points. This would mean 40 stones or 20 per earring.
Small diamonds set in pave or with many stones together as in earring with many diamonds are quality graded.
The cut is apparently not so critical as color and clarity. You have likely seen diamonds with a white look? These stone have no reflection from inside the stone and only sparkle from the surface faces cut on the stones. These stones have a very, very low clarity grade. Then again, the diamonds may have plenty of sparkle from within the stones, light reflected from the inside of the stones with the facets (cut faces) on the back reflecting the light back to your eye.
This is what you want. Decent clarity is needed and I suggest stones of the SI to I1 grade. In small stones, I1 is fine generally and dark spots are not really seen. Still, look for good return of light from within the diamonds. Some better earrings have higher clarity stones and the earrings will look slightly more brilliant.
Ask if they have any idea of the clarity of the diamonds.
Color is important. Often, to gain clarity and use stone relatively free of dark spots, manufacturers will use a stone of lower color grade. This means the earrings may have well selected fairly clean stones of a brownish or yellowish color. At first, you do not see this color but it is apparent when held next to diamonds of a higher (so called "whiter" or less colored) grade.
If the stones have a slight tinge of brown or yellowish, look for a better grade. Ask if the stones are of good color or slightly off color. Go for better color without the brown or yellow tones. Much of this is up to your own eye. Also, if you loose a stone, off color stones are more difficult to match up for a replacement!
The single cut stones are more round overall in top view. Still the number of facets is the same. Full cut stones will have more sparkle and life to your eye. Stones of 1 point or more are better in appearance if full cut. Ask if the stones are single cut or full cut stones.
Quality for earrings like you describe runs from very good to frankly very bad. Bench jewelers often do resizing services for national department stores. Much of the jewelry was tagged with a higher price and a "sale" price of about 50% off. The 50% off price is about what the jewelry was worth. But would I get any for my wife? No!
Why? So many of the sparkling jewelry was very poorly made. Bench jewelers must clean jewelry before any soldering as for sizing a ring may be done and at least one of three of the rings from that store lost stones in the ultrasonic cleaner before we did anything! The prettiness of the jewelry went away because of the poor workmanship. Workmanship is difficult to judge when you are not in the business. Ask how the stones are set into the metal. If they say "channel set" ask to look through magnification.
A real channel set has the sides of the channel pressed down onto the edges of the stone. A fake channel set has a channel for the stones but the stones are held in by little pieces of metal (a small pick of metal) from the inside channel walls pushed down, one little chip of metal on each side of the stone. This is "pick" setting and is very common in lower quality jewelry making. Do not get pick set stones or you will be losing stones.
Ask the clerk to clean the items you are considering. Ask if they have an ultrasonic machine and that you would like the earrings cleaned for a few minutes in the machine. This will take off finger smudges and let you see the actual sparkle and color of the diamonds better. Also, if stones are not securely set, there is a chance some will come out in the cleaner! That is not a foolproof test but a good start. Do not hesitate to ask to have the jewelry cleaned in an ultrasonic before you pull out your check book or plastic card!
Ask if the stones are set securely and if they have had any problems with lost stones from that line of jewelry. This is a reasonable question. Often, jewelry with many little stones is not set securely in the first place. Better quality items will go a lifetime with no problems at all.
In small stones or large, yellow gold holds stone safely as does white gold. Perhaps platinum is the best overall. If you do not want the dull look platinum get after a while, go with white gold since white is your choice. What makes the yellow and white different is hardness. Generally, white gold is harder than yellow and may wear a bit better over time. When we set into yellow gold, we allow more thickness on the settings to account for this.
White gold has problems if you are not careful. Any chlorine such as in swimming pools and hot tubs will work havoc on most white gold. This is because most white gold has nickel to make the gold look white.
The effect is a weakening of the make up of the white gold recipe. Exposure to chlorine in strength or repeated at a swimming pool can actually lead to white gold prongs literally falling off. White gold holds stones well but avoid the chlorine! Unless you want platinum earrings, white gold is just fine. This will last and last and keep shine platinum will not keep. Just keep it clean and away from chlorine!
Bottom Line, deal with a business which is a jewelry store first, not a department within another store.(There are exceptions. Ask if they service their jewelry and have bench jeweler "in house".) If the business has a good reputation, that is one to try first.

The beginning of Skagen ladies watches is a tale of Danish immigrants who came to New York to market another brand of watches in North America that were nice to have. Some timepieces were sent to the United States in order for the Danish company to begin a large expansion worldwide. The designs were liked, but just because of the brand and logo and this was not enough to sell in North America. Americans were looking for more than name recognition; they were looking for something distinctive and reliable as well as being priced within reason. This made the couple order four unique designs from the Danish company and almost eight-hundred pieces. These initial designs became the Skagen brand. The order was sold quickly and another order went just as rapidly. The beginning of Skagen was launched. The couple worked on 30 more models and designs for the next year. The two had a distinct idea of what Americans may buy and were looking to purchase. These models were designed with this in mind and it worked. The models began to sell and the company was slowly beginning to grow. The Scandinavian concept and quality of the men's wrist watches were also marketed as sensibly priced time pieces for the everyday person. The accidental meeting of one of the designers with a person from a large American catalog turned the tide. Selling the watches from their New York apartment house, the couple earned over $800,000 and sold every bit of stock they had on hand. This first success was one of the women's watch designs the immigrants had developed. After this early success, the designers teamed up with Bloomingdale's who took the Skagen brand just on a trial basis. Every bit of stock the store had sold in one day. This began the revolution and it has not stopped since. The company was named the as one of the bright rising stars in the watch market in 1998. This would allow the company to launch into other markets, including their homeland. Soon after their success in America, the two originators set up an office in their home country of Denmark and quickly grew to eighty stores. The 250 designs marketed by the designer are being sold worldwide in over 5,000 stores. The chance that this couple took with the original marketing of four designs has grown into a million dollar company spanning the world while still being creative in design. The company also has moved from that small New York apartment house to find themselves developing new watch designs in Denmark and around the world. Those two immigrants have grown to over 170 employees, where everyone is involved in the decision making. The roots and passions of the original designers have kept everyone wanting more.
Pearl earrings, one of the most beautiful and precious gems, never go out of style. Pearl earrings look even more stunning when paired with the right necklaces and bracelets. Pearls come in various shapes, but the common ones include the round, semi-round, button, and pear earrings. Slightly flattened button pearls are the kinds that are frequently stringed into a pair of pearl earrings. Pear earrings, which are sometimes known as teardrop pearls, also make nice ear ornaments.
A nice thing about pearl earrings too, is that they mix well with other types of gemstones like gold and diamond. For a new feel of pearl earrings, there are also the dangling earrings, the clustered earrings, but as they say, nothing beats the original- the classic white pearl earrings.
Pearls symbolize a lot of things: love, luck, happiness, and success. Pearl earrings began from the early Chinese myths that talked about pearls falling from the sky. The pearls were believed to be tears of the gods, which is probably why they are now considered wedding gifts in most countries. Pearl earrings are also standard accessories of brides during weddings because they promote marital bliss. Freshwater pearls are the gemstones for the first year of marriage. These earrings can also be used to celebrate the 3rd, 12th and 30th year of marriage.
Pearl earrings are not just for married women and bride-to-be?s though. Pearls with a hint of color like pink, or even brown and black are used by younger women, while the typical white or off-white are for the more mature women. What?s great about these earrings is that they are fitting for women of all ages.

Brands to Brandish
As a budding connoisseur of designer watches for urban professionals, you will be faced with a myriad of brands. Each one has its unique merits and its distinguishing marks but you will find that each one is almost as dedicated as its competitors in bringing you the latest developments in watch technology.
You should be well-versed in the following popular brands of designer watches, though this list is not complete due to space considerations:
Bulova watches are known the world over for their combination of outstanding durability and astounding design. In fact, a Bulova Automatic watch was dropped in 1941 and recovered in 2008 from the seabed in working condition! You also have a complete line of watches to choose from to suit your various needs ? from the reasonably priced Caravelle line to the signature Bulova, from the sporty Accutron to the dressy Wittnauer Swiss.

If you are the adventurous type, do not be fooled into thinking that the brand name equals stagnation. The way with which time is measured is definitely off the beaten track.
Esq watches are designed to buck trends. When you have one, you can be sure that it will outlast any fad in men?s watches with its attention to details from the watch movement, to the watch face and the watch straps.
When you go up the corporate ladder, and consequently in financial capacity, you must invest in these expensive timepieces to make your watch collection complete:

Rolex watches are number one in the minds of professionals for good reasons. These are so precise that the Wimbledon and Australian Open tournaments use Rolex as timepieces and so durable that it has scaled the heights of Mt. Everest and dived the lows of the Mariana Trench. Of course, you have to pay more than the average watches since the cheapest can cost around $5,000 and the most expensive at around $30,000.
With watches, the determining factors are your preference (sporty, dressy, in between) and your budget (affordable, mid-range, stratospheric high).
Terms to You Need to Know
When selecting designer watches for urban professionals, you will be faced with watch lingo. You do not need to fret because it is quiet understandable for the most novice of laymen. You will do well, however, to know these three terms that are often the hallmarks of good designer watches for urban professionals:
COSC (Contr?le Officiel Suisse des Chronom?tres) translated as Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute, certifies as to the accuracy and precision of watches made in Switzerland. If your designer watch has the institute?s approval, it can be rightfully called a chronometer with a guarantee of good quality.
Chronograph is the term used to describe the timekeeping and stopwatch functions of chronometers. If you can afford it, opt for the analog chronograph watches instead of the digital kind; the latter is just so casual for office wear and it can mean laziness on your part.
Perpetual calendar describes the capacity of wristwatches to display dates automatically. This is an important part of your wristwatch because you want to be reminded of both time and day!
Ultimately, your collection of designer watches for urban professionals should reflect who you are and who you aspire to be. You will have the confidence to look at the time and know that you are right on track.
Rich, royal, beautiful & splendid are the words that roll off your tongue by mere mentioning of ?Emerald.? What makes it so special? It?s magnificent color, its rarity, durability or those virtues associated with this gem? Well, all these qualities, considered together, ascribe a stone the status of a precious gemstone. Emerald is a gemstone from the beryl family of stones having a stunning green color, symbolizing serenity & peace. This name was derived from the French esmeraude, which means simply ?green stone.? Unlike other beryls, emeralds often contain inclusions and other flaws and these flaws are considered a part of the character of the stone. Emerald is having deep velvet green to having a shade of grass green. The gorgeous green of the emerald is a color which conveys harmony, love of Nature and elemental joie de vivre. The human eye can never see enough of this unique color. Green is perceived as fresh and vivid, never as monotonous. It is the symbol of happiness, success in love, wealth and peace of mind. Emerald has soothing touch and pleasant sight, which gives peaceful vibrations and captivates the heart. It retains its color and luster in all kinds of lights and shades. Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May & for the zodiac sign of Taurus. It is also believed to be the sacred stone of the goddess Venus. It was thought to preserve love. It is also said to assist women in childbirth. Legend says emeralds strengthen the owner?s memory, quicken the intelligence and assist in predicting the future. Emerald gemstone increases reasoning power, presence of mind and spiritual power. It is traditionally given on the 35th and 55th marriage anniversaries. Most of the world?s emeralds are mined in Colombia, Brazil and Zambia. It is also found in India, Russia, Pakistan, Tanzania, Afghanistan & Madagascar; however, Colombia continues to be at the top of the list of the countries in which fine emeralds are found. It was known that Emerald was a favorite gem of Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt. Emeralds also adorned Russian crown jewels. One of the world's largest is the so-called 'Mogul Emerald'. It dates from 1695, weighs 217.80 carats, and is some 10cm tall.
Diamond shoppers typically want a diamond that is big, bright and has lots of sparkle. Yet when they go to the jewelry store, the attention seems to be on carat weight, color and clarity. What is diamond clarity and how does it influence the beauty of the diamond?
All diamonds have inclusions in them because nature forms diamonds in the high temperature, high-pressure regions deep below the earth?s surface. Diamonds are crystals of carbon and the crystals formed in this harsh environment are never perfect. Inclusions are the tiny identifying characteristics inside a diamond. Some of the more common types of inclusions are feathers, crystals, pinpoints, clouds, needles, and twinning wisps. Diamonds also have characteristics on the surface, called blemishes. Clarity affects a diamond purchase when inclusions and blemishes are visible to the eye, when they adversely influence the path of light through the diamond, or when they negatively affect the durability of the diamond.
The diamond industry has established clarity grades to identify various levels of clarity in terms of visibility. The visibility of a particular inclusion or blemish is dependent on its location within the diamond, its physical size and the affect it has when viewed under different lighting conditions. The clarity grades rate diamonds on the visibility of inclusions and blemishes under 10-power magnification.
Flawless and Internally Flawless (IF) are the highest clarity grades and indicate no inclusions are visible under 10-power magnification, with the Internally Flawless allowing only very minor blemishes. Even Internally Flawless diamonds have visible inclusions when viewed under higher magnification.
VVS1 and VVS2 grades indicate very, very small inclusions, which might take 30 minutes to find with a microscope.
VS1 and VS2 grades have very small inclusions that are visible under the microscope but seldom every visible to the unaided eye.
SI1 and SI2 grades have small inclusions under the microscope and are sometimes visible with the aided eye.
I1, I2 and I3 grades have inclusions that are obvious with the unaided eye.
It is important to have the clarity grade designated by one of the top diamond grading laboratories such as the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or AGS (American Gem Society). Clarity grades on other documentation can be exaggerated and inaccurate relative to industry standards.
What do these clarity grades mean for the diamond shopper? There are many clarity grades and often a big price difference between Flawless clarity and clean to the eye clarity. Most diamond shoppers want a diamond that has no visible inclusions. For brilliant shapes like rounds, ovals, princess, and radiant cuts, that usually means at least SI1 clarity. For step-cut shapes like the emerald and Asscher that have fewer facets to hide the inclusions, at least VS2 clarity is generally preferred.
If these are the target clarity grades, why do shoppers buy diamond with higher or lower clarity? Sometimes shoppers are under the false impression that higher clarity will make a diamond more beautiful. This is a myth promoted by jewelers who have high clarity diamonds they need to sell or want to sell because they require higher prices and therefore more profit. Some men feel only a perfect diamond (flawless) is good enough for a perfect woman. Some shoppers simply want to buy higher clarity, just because they can.
Shoppers who purchase lower clarity diamonds with eye visible inclusions often do so because lower clarity is the only way they can achieve bigger size within their budget. Sometimes diamond shoppers are swept up in the excitement of the purchase and end up with a diamond that looked great in the store lighting but has visible inclusions in normal lighting with closer examination. The bright lights in a jewelry store often make it hard to see inclusions that are easy to see at home or in office lighting.
The purchase decision of a diamond is a mix of logic, emotion and convenience. The shoppers who are happiest with their purchase long term are those who understand their own shopping priorities and then find a diamond that best meets those requirements. For diamond clarity, the shoppers need to determine how important it is to them not to see any inclusions with the unaided eye. Then they have to decide how important the higher clarity grades are regardless of whether they influence the beauty of the diamond or not.
Of course, the price of the diamond ultimately comes into play; even for those shoppers who claim price is not an issue. Most shoppers are seeking their own personalized mix of size, color, clarity, cut, and price when making the purchase decision for their special diamond.
The relationship between women and diamonds has long been established and it is certainly true to say that diamonds are amongst the longest lasting friends that a girl can ever have. It is no surprise therefore that a woman's diamond watch has become increasingly popular as a symbol of class and style.
Diamond rings have long been a popular choice as gifts which represent the sincerity of affection from a lover or admirer, but an increasingly wide range of jewelry which includes diamonds has become popular as such gifts. A diamond ladies watch is perhaps somewhat unique in that it is not only exquisitely decorative and visually scintillating but has a very practical value as well.
Because women's diamond watches tend to be smaller than the diamond watches made for men they usually have a slightly smaller number of diamonds decorating the face, and as a result of this diamond watches for women tend to be slightly cheaper than men's diamond watches.
The exact number of diamonds which can be included in the decoration of a diamond ladies watch varies tremendously. In some cases a watch can be decorated with a single diamond, often in a very significant position, either in the centre of the dial or often just above, or in the place of, the number twelve. In other cases a womens diamond watch can include a huge number of smaller diamonds decorating almost the entire face of the watch, and replacing the numerals around the outside of the face. With such variation it is extremely easy to be able to choose the sort of watch which most closely suits the style and personal taste of the woman who will be wearing it. Some women will like to be able to adorn themselves with as much bling and sparkle as possible, whilst others will prefer a more subtle and conservative approach to their jewelry.
It is certainly not hard to imagine the kind of impression and reaction that a woman's diamond watch can produce. Imagine the surprise and astonishment that giving an exquisite diamond watch to your partner will evoke. Certainly there is no possibility that your intentions and devotion can be doubted, and the message that giving such an extraordinarily beautiful gift provides will be clearer than virtually anything else. In fact there is little in the world that is clearer than a well cut, good quality diamond. Diamonds are rare and take millions of years to be created. For these reasons they continue to represent the very pinnacle of style and status. Women's diamond watches manage to combine this remarkable jewel with an elegant design and sophistication that will certainly not look out of place on any woman's wrist.
Because a diamond ladies watch has a very practical purpose it will often be worn more frequently than any other item of jewelry. Not only that, but a woman's diamond watch will complement any outfit and any other jewelry that a lady chooses to wear. Diamond watches are certainly the ultimate accessory, and there is no chance at all of it ever gathering dust at the back of her jewelry drawer.
Although it is easy to assume that most diamonds are clear and relatively colorless, diamonds do come in a variety of colours. Because of this there are several ways in which a womens diamond watch can be designed in a particularly feminine manner. Of all of the diamonds in the world the rarest diamond of all is the pink diamond. Some women's diamond watches incorporate these pink diamonds in very noticeable ways, and by doing this there are two distinct benefits.
The first benefit of having a pink diamond embedded in a diamond ladies watch is that the overall style can accentuate the delicate pink shades, creating a watch style which is distinctly feminine. The second benefit is simply that the very fact that a pink diamond has been used in fashioning the watch in a very visible way adds tremendous value to it due to the rarity and high cost of the diamond. The choice of pink diamond by man for a ladies watch indicates not only a personal statement of intent, but also a high degree of understanding and attention,
Today, modern scientific technology has advanced to the point where it is able to create synthetic diamonds which are virtually indistinguishable from natural diamonds, except when it comes to examining the price label. Although a woman's diamond watch can incorporate either natural or synthetic diamonds, it is virtually impossible sometimes to tell the difference, and this has resulted in diamond watches for women becoming much more accessible and increasingly popular.
